Katy Montgomery is a Principal at The Chertoff Group, where she is responsible for strategic communications advisory services designed to help clients enhance trust and articulate specific points of view around security risk management in today’s increasingly connected world. Bringing unique insight and experience having worked in both government and the private sector, Katy helps craft and execute results-driven communications strategies while also serving as a trusted advisor in the areas of public relations, issues management, executive engagement and stakeholder outreach, and crisis communications for many Chertoff Group clients, including Fortune 500 companies and national trade associations.  

Previously, Katy served as Deputy Assistant Secretary for Public Affairs at the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS). As a member of the senior leadership team, Katy was responsible for creating and implementing proactive and strategic communications plans for homeland security programs and policies involving both domestic and international audiences.  She also served as a department spokesperson, working with national and local reporters and other important stakeholder groups to communicate important information relating to our nation’s security posture.

Earlier in her career, Katy served as a White House spokesperson for USA Freedom Corps, a post-September 11, 2001 Presidential initiative designed to help Americans answer the “call to service” by helping their fellow citizens in need.  In this capacity, she helped develop and implement communications planning and media strategy relating to volunteer service as well as conducting outreach to media, nonprofit, and sports organizations to promote the President’s Volunteer Service Award and President’s Council on Service and Civic Participation.

Prior to working at the White House, Katy served as deputy press secretary and spokesperson for the Secretary of Education helping to construct and execute successful communications plans for the department, including the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 — the first legislative initiative of the new Administration resulting in historic and far-reaching education reforms to our nation’s schools.

Katy serves on the Virginia Hospital Center Foundation’s Women’s Health Circle, which represents a collection of dedicated women who value community and want to ensure access to the best medical care is available to everyone through the Virginia Hospital Center and its programs.  

Katy received her bachelor’s degree from California State University Sacramento.
