WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Chertoff Group, a strategic security and risk management advisory firm, today announced that the Right Honorable Dr. John Reid, a former nine-time United Kingdom (UK) government minister and 23-year Member of Parliament, has joined the Chertoff Group in their London office.

“I had the distinct honor and pleasure of working with my UK counterpart Dr. Reid in homeland security matters while serving as U.S. Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security.  We worked diligently to share critical information, implement meaningful reforms and prevent further terrorist attacks upon our homelands,” said Michael Chertoff, former U.S. Department of Homeland Security Secretary and co-founder of the Chertoff Group.  “I look forward to continuing our service and friendship together, and sharing our combined, hands-on experience with those seeking risk management and security advice in the areas of defense, homeland security, and intelligence.”

Before joining the Chertoff Group, Dr. Reid was a Member of Parliament in the UK for 23 years, half of which he served as a Government minister.  Considered one of the most experienced UK Cabinet ministers in modern history, Dr. Reid has held more ministerial posts at the Cabinet level than any other politician in recent history. Such posts include: Home Secretary, Defence Secretary, Northern Ireland Secretary, Minister for Transport and Armed Forces Minister.  As Home Secretary he led the Administration’s counter-terrorism efforts and introduced meaningful reforms re-focusing the UK Home Office towards the contemporary challenges of international crime, immigration and counter-terrorism.  Dr. Reid has served as a senior consultant to several major commercial companies and is presently Honorary Professor and Chair of the Institute of Security and Resilience Studies at University College London.  On May 28, 2010, Dr. Reid was honored by being nominated for membership to the Upper Chamber of the UK Parliament, the House of Lords.

Dr. Reid joins a highly seasoned leadership team at the Chertoff Group’s London office which includes Sir David Veness, former United Nations Undersecretary General for Safety and Security and former Assistant Commissioner of Specialist Operations at Scotland Yard and Graham Love, former Chief Executive Officer of QinetiQ, a publicly traded UK defense, intelligence and homeland security products and services company. 

Dr. Reid also joins a global leadership team based out of the group’s Washington, DC and New York offices which includes  General Michael V. Hayden, former Director of the Central Intelligence Agency and the National Security Agency; Paul A. Schneider, former Deputy Secretary of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS); Charles E. Allen, former DHS Undersecretary for Intelligence and Analysis; Rear Admiral Jay M. Cohen, former DHS Undersecretary for Science & Technology; Jayson Ahern, former Acting Commissioner for Customs and Border Protection at DHS; Dr. Jeff Runge, former DHS Chief Medical Officer; and Dr. Richard Falkenrath, former New York City Police Department (NYPD) Deputy Commissioner for Counterterrorism, among others.
